Ten Things I’ve Learned on my Spending Fast
1 week ago today, I decided to eliminate debt in my life by going on a spending fast. I was inspired by the website: www.andthenshesaved.com. So far, I would estimate that I have saved at least $250. Here’s what I’ve learned so far:
- Real friends will always eat in with you.
- Not spending too much makes you want to earn more. It puts the fire in you and helps you value your work.
- Entertainment is valuable when it has a high cultural quotient: from now on, I will spend money to see a well-made film instead of wasting it on a whim to see a hollywood one.
- Libraries are awesome (can’t believe I forgot this one!)
- Spending less also means eating healthier and exercising more (I got my bike out early this year!)
- Money is often spent on distractions (booze, entertainment, new clothes) which keep you from knowing yourself and finding peace.
- While it may be difficult to say no to something like brunch on a Saturday morning, the feeling quickly disappears when you discover that you now have time for a mini picnic at the beach!
- You have way more clothing, food, and toiletries than you realize. Some of it just needs some love.
- Most of what we spend is waste. Spent wisely, all the little things could add up to bigger, more important things. As my friend Ellian’s grandma says “look after the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves”. Beauty and quality are worth saving for.
- Pretty much everyone has debt or worries about money, they just don’t talk about it. I think it’s time to change that.

That which is overdesigned, too highly specific, anticipates outcome; the anticipation of outcome guarantees, if not failure, the absence of grace.
